Open Floor

When we enter a room for group work or individual movement therapy there is that beginning moment when the space is open, when nothing has happened yet, nothing has begun, nothing has been decided; there is a wide-open field of possibility. This potent moment, in contrast to unconsciousness or habit, is alive in every moment when we attend to it; what now? What’s next in the continual ever-changing movement of my experience of life?

When the floor is truly open there is support for anything to happen. The floor literally supports the mover or the client in terms of providing a ground. The moments of open questioning supports an alive, potentiated and witnessed open environment in which to sense, feel, enter or avoid, express or not, any aspect of our experience. It’s an embodied, creative, reflective, meditation. The gift of entering this dance is awareness, the embrace of our embodied Self, and the discovery of our freedom of choice and new possibilities, all in the good company of awake and encouraging others,

The Open Floor is the nature of all the movement work I do, in 5Rhythms courses, as well as in my practice of Movement Psychotherapy. The Open Floor Group Process is a structured format for exploring individual process within the intersubjective field of group dynamics. In many ways, this can be seen as an extension of the Open Seat work done in Gestalt Awareness Practice to include the embodied experience of entire group in each session.
