5Rhythms Movement Practice

Dance is an art-form, movement is a life-form. - Gabrielle Roth

This is a form of movement meditation whose central teaching is, “If you put the psyche into motion, it will heal itself.” Developed over a lifetime by noted author, philosopher, and director Gabrielle Roth, the 5Rhythms® are, by name, Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness; together they make up a cycle of movement known as the Wave.

When we dance the 5Rhythms, we enter in turn into five distinct fields of energy. By inviting each rhythm or quality of energy to move through our bodies, we may also open ourselves to experience and explore the various qualities of thought, feeling, and physicality associated with each rhythm.

The 5Rhythms practice calls our attention to a natural progression of energy which we can observe both in nature and in many social, emotional, and psychological cycles. When we practice embodying these different rhythms, and become adept at allowing our bodies to move in accordance with them, we often begin to notice such benefits as greater vitality, increased focus and presence, improved physical, emotional, and mental flexibility, sharper instincts, and an expanded sense of well-being.
